Sometimes working on a novel feels like you’re on a road with no idea where it’s leading. Something’s not working – a character or your point-of-view schema or your structure –


and you can’t figure it out. Then you see something crazy, like a tree that grows bicycles,


and something twigs and you scramble for your notebook, ready for the next draft…
